When we had our shop, I developed this hot chocolate recipe. It was our instant hot chocolate mix. We made it with frothed grass-fed milk and a big dollop of whipped cream on top. But we also sold it in mason jars, so people could take it back home, when they left the island or use it as a gift for a dear friend…
The idea with this blog is just to share ideas and things that I make so others can enjoy them too. Maybe learn something new and be free from always having to buy a lot of crap at the store. Because there is so much you can make yourself and there are mostly nothing but good reasons to do so.
I guess those who don’t wish to make homemade stuff, probably aren’t reading this blog. But there are also those who cannot find the energy to do things themselves, they need help and support from those who do, I believe giving is a virtue and offering a hand to someone in need, is an equally great virtue.
So if you know someone who loves hot chocolate, or someone who has children who do. Who still buys the store bought version which usually has nothing to do with actual chocolate and is pumped with additives such as synthetic flavors, fillers and lecithin…
Then maybe you should try making them this as a gift instead!
As you probably know, I’m not an advocate for conventional versions of things that we can easily make ourselves. So when we had the shop and we needed to have a hot chocolate on our menu, I looked for various products. I wanted a product without additives and a product that had less refined sugar and actually contained real chocolate.
We didn’t want to sell that super sweet and tasteless hot coco most coffee shops make, and as you probably already guessed, I never found the kind of product I was looking for.
So I had to make my own. Since I didn’t have the time to make a traditional “chocolat chaud” like this one! Every single time someone came into the café and ordered a hot chocolate. So I figured out a way to make this instant powder instead, which I simply mixed into hot milk and topped with whipped cream and some homemade chocolate sprinkles.
So that’s how this recipe originally came about and now I’m sharing it with you, so others can benefit from it too.

Instant Hot Chocolate Powder
Equipment
- 1 Coffee/Spice Mill (I use this to break down the sugar into unrefined powdered sugar)
- 1 Mini Food Processor
Ingredients
- 120 g Unsweetened Cacao Powder
- 75 g Raw Cane Sugar (Dulcita/Panela)
- 35 g Homemade Vanilla Sugar (You can find the recipe on the blog)
- 2 g Fleur de Sel (or fine celtic salt)
- 200 g Dark Chocolate 55-85% (I only use additive free chocolate, since I do not want lecithin, palm oil, butter or refined sugar in my food)
Instructions
- Weigh all the ingredients.
- Put raw cane sugar, Fleur de Sel and 3 spoons of the cocoa into a spice grinder and blitz it for 30 secs.
- It is done when it looks like brown powdered sugar, if it doesn't look like this, then give it another 30 secs.
- Put all ingredients and your brown powdered sugar in the mini food processor and pulse until the chocolate is completely powdered.
- Avoid running the food processor for a long time as it heats up the motor and a hot motor will melt the chocolate, so it is best just to use pulse.
- Put the instant chocolate powder into a jar or a few smaller jars, if you are making gifts.
- Use 1-2 tablespoons per cup of hot chocolate depending on the size of the cup and desired intensity. Make sure the milk is around 158-167 Fahrenheit when you stir the powder into the milk.
Notes

There is something really cosy about making this recipe, not only because it is cozy to drink a cup of hot coco, but because you can wrap it up nicely and give it away to someone who needs it more than you do. Homemade things has a bit of our soul in them and they usually taste better too. I hope you will try making this powder, which can make a dark morning or a grey afternoon brighter. It is so cozy to use it and a lot easier than making it from scratch every single time. I often make a double batch of this powder and pour it into a large mason jar. Then its always easy to make hot chocolate when your family craves it. Have a blessed day!
Much Love in Christ
